Here are our beautiful new Jonathan Cape postcards, complete with illustrative frame, as drawn by our pal James Davies. We wanted a postcard which we could use interactively - to get you guys involved in doodling when we’re out and out at events - and thought a frame around the edge of the postcard would work best to showcase your work. At first we thought we’d go with a photograph of an actual frame but thinking about it, it made so much more sense to go for an illustrated frame. I mean, it just fits in so much better with what we do, doesn’t it?!
You’ll have seen them (and maybe even drawn something on them!) if you were at Comiket last Saturday. If not, worry not as we’re sure to be at plenty of other events throughout the year.
Stay tuned as we’ve also got a selection of entries from our Comiket postcard competition coming up this week… maybe you’ll see yours!

If any of you came to see us at Comiket you’ll know we were running a postcard competition. Armed with loads of brand new, redesigned Jonathan Cape postcards we asked you to show us your illustrative talents by drawing something (anything!) on the postcard. Well, after much debate we’ve picked three entries we love: a winner, runner up and a highly commended choice. We’ll be posting these shortly but first we’ll be posting some of the other entries we received. Here’s one to get you started…

Last Saturday a gang from the Cape team set off to man our stand at Comiket - an independent comics / illustration fair in London. We’ve been before and this time was certainly no disappointment. Bigger and better than ever, there was a whole host of amazing artists there, not to mention everyone who came over to our table and said hello… we love y’all! *sob*

Ahem, moving on… Clare, editorial assistant at Cape, has written us a blog about the day, which also happened to be her first time at Comiket. Kind of hectic, kind of amusing and so much more - keep reading to hear about the hijinks the Cape team got up to.

After a slightly tortuous journey (in which my taxi driver got horribly lost and me and my precious cargo of catalogues and Gigantic Beard copies ended up on a building site), I arrived at my first ever Comiket. It was busy despite the gorgeous weather outside, and I was really impressed by the buzz and the friendliness of the crowd. Alice and I took over from Hannah, got our knitting out (sitting time is Gigantic-Beard-knitting time), and started chatting to S. J. Harris, who’d turned up for a signing. After an excellent conversation about P.G. Wodehouse S. J. went to check out some of the other tables, while Warren Pleece took to the live drawing stand. It was around this time that we ran out of change and first Alice, then I, had to leg it to a local corner shop and pub to get some change. Thank you to G Express Food Store and The Star of Kings for providing much needed £1 coins in our hour of need.

By the time I got back Warren Pleece was doing a signing at our stand. We’ve emailed each other a lot about Montague Terrace so it was great to meet him at last – and he helped Alice get her copy of Nelson signed by lots of lovely comics people. Stephen Collins turned up to carry on signing copies of The Gigantic Beard that was Evil, while the Cape gigantic beard had grown to knee-length after some serious stitching. Karrie Fransman turned up for a chat – it turns out we have 2 mutual friends, yay! – and then suddenly it was 7 p.m. and time to start packing up. Just one regret - I wish I’d had more of a chance to wander round as the other tables looked brilliant. Next year I’ll make sure I get there early to do just that…

Recently, we’ve been sending some of our illustrators a bunch of postcards and asking them to doodle something (anything!) for us. We’ll be posting them all over the coming days but let’s kick it off with this ‘earworm’ from SImone Lia. Anyone recognise the song?

Some brilliant sketches by the Pleece Brothers.

I had a George Mcfly moment today: my first book arrived. I was happier with it than I ever imagined - and after two years work, that was something of a relief. Jonathan Cape have  made it look beautiful - the embossed casing and spine look so great. The quote on the back from Raymond Briggs, whose Ethel and Ernest was a big influence on me first getting into comics, is the best bit though.

YAAAAAAYYY!!! I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy now…….

It certainly feels like we’ve been in winter mode for, oh I don’t know, about eight months. Hope the King of Spring hurries up…
